Kinzua is an experimental music project founded by composer and sonic artist Alex Monroe in 2018, taking its name from the submerged town of Kinzua in Pennsylvania. Blending field recordings, modular synthesis, and acoustic instrumentation, Kinzua crafts immersive soundscapes that evoke both natural and industrial environments, exploring themes of displacement, memory, and renewal. Monroe’s background in electroacoustic composition and environmental activism informs Kinzua’s work, which often incorporates materials sourced from abandoned landscapes and rivers.
Since releasing their debut album “Submerged Histories,” Kinzua has performed at site-specific installations, contemporary art venues, and experimental festivals throughout North America and Europe, garnering attention for their innovative use of spatial audio and live processing. Frequently collaborating with visual artists and ecologists, Kinzua aims to foster dialogue between sound, place, and ecological change, encouraging listeners to engage deeply with the disappearing worlds around them.
