Jamie January is a multidisciplinary artist whose evocative works bridge the realms of painting, sculpture, and installation. Born in 1990 in Chicago, January’s practice is deeply informed by themes of memory, resilience, and transformation, often drawing inspiration from the textures and stories of urban environments. After earning a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, January exhibited widely throughout the Midwest before relocating to Los Angeles in 2018.
Their art combines found objects, layered pigments, and experimental materials to create immersive experiences that invite viewers to reconsider the relationships between place, identity, and collective history. Jamie has been featured in group and solo exhibitions at galleries such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, LACE in Los Angeles, and the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. In addition to their studio practice, Jamie is dedicated to arts education, facilitating workshops and community projects that foster creative expression in underrepresented communities.
Their innovative approach has garnered critical acclaim and several residencies, including the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and a fellowship at Headlands Center for the Arts.
