Gyatso is a contemporary Tibetan artist whose work explores the intersections of cultural identity, politics, and globalization. Born in 1961 in Lhasa, Tibet, Gyatso trained in traditional Tibetan thangka painting before expanding his practice to incorporate modern and international influences. After leaving Tibet in the 1990s and studying at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, Gyatso developed a distinctive visual language that fuses Buddhist iconography with elements of pop culture, mass media, and found objects.
His art, spanning painting, collage, installation, and sculpture, engages with themes of displacement and cultural hybridity, reflecting his experience as both insider and outsider in multiple worlds. Widely exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, the Rubin Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gyatso’s work has been recognized for its dynamic interrogation of tradition, authority, and the ways in which personal and collective histories are visualized and transformed.
