Black Moth Super Rainbow is an enigmatic experimental pop group originating from Pennsylvania, formed in 2002 by frontman and principal songwriter Tobacco (Thomas Fec). The band's elusive lineup has often shifted, with members adopting pseudonyms and maintaining a shroud of mystery around their identities. Seamlessly blending elements of psychedelic rock, electronica, and lo-fi pop, Black Moth Super Rainbow is best known for their woozy synth textures, analog warmth, vocoder-heavy vocals, and hazy, surreal songwriting.
Their music draws inspiration from 1970s educational films, vintage analog equipment, and outsider pop sensibilities, resulting in a distinct and instantly recognizable sound. The group released their debut album, Falling Through a Field, in 2003 and garnered critical attention and a devoted cult following with subsequent records such as Dandelion Gum and Eating Us. Black Moth Super Rainbow’s self-produced visual aesthetic, warped melodies, and enigmatic presence have earned them a singular place in the indie and psychedelic music landscape, with Tobacco’s gritty solo work and collaborations extending their influence even further.
Despite their reclusive approach, the band continues to intrigue and inspire listeners with their innovative, dreamlike sonic worlds.
