YAAM (Young African Art Market)
Berlin is a renowned cultural venue and nightclub situated on the banks of the Spree River in
Berlin, Germany. Established in the mid-1990s, YAAM emerged out of
Berlin’s vibrant post-reunification club scene, carving a unique space for itself by combining nightlife with a community-driven approach reflecting Afro-Caribbean culture. Originally located near Ostbahnhof, the venue has faced several forced relocations due to urban development projects and gentrification pressures; however, it has managed to preserve its distinctive identity and loyal community over the years.
In its current incarnation on An der Schillingbrücke, YAAM stands as an open, colorful riverside haven that incorporates beach areas, sports facilities, street food stalls, and art spaces, in addition to its nightclub and concert venue. YAAM is particularly well known for its inclusive philosophy, providing a safe and welcoming environment for people from all backgrounds, and for being a thriving hub for the African diaspora in
Berlin. Its reputation is built around a steadfast commitment to cultural exchange, social activism, and support for grassroots art and music scenes.
As a result, YAAM holds a significant place in
Berlin’s nightlife not only as a hotspot for reggae, dancehall, hip hop, and world music, but also as a community institution championing diversity, anti-racism, and creative freedom. Its lineup consistently features both emerging talent and prominent artists, contributing to
Berlin’s status as a global city for music and culture.
Notable artists who have graced the stages at YAAM include international stars such as Damian Marley, Sean Paul, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Ms.
Lauryn Hill, Beenie Man, Chronixx, Protoje, and
Mungo’
s Hi Fi. Additionally, the club has welcomed influential local acts and DJs like Seeed, Gentleman, Patrice, DJ Maxxx, and
Berlin Boom Orchestra, alongside regular showcases for up-and-coming talent from Germany’s diverse urban music landscape.
