Webster Hall, located at 125 East 11th Street in New York City, is one of the most iconic and historic nightclubs and concert venues in the United States. Originally constructed in 1886, the building was designed by architect Charles Rentz and has stood as a central figure in New York’s cultural and social life for well over a century. Webster Hall initially hosted a wide variety of events, including balls, social gatherings, labor union meetings, and political rallies, making it a focal point of community and activism, especially during the early 20th century.
Its significance extends to the Prohibition era, when the club thrived as a speakeasy, drawing in a lively crowd with its reputation for wild parties and avant-garde events. Over the decades, Webster Hall underwent various transformations, including a major reconstruction after a fire in 1992, which further rejuvenated its status as a key nightlife destination. Ownership and management have changed hands several times, with the Bowery Presents taking over in the early 2000s and, more recently, a multi-million dollar renovation by AEG and BSE Global that concluded in 2019, restoring elements of the original architecture while modernizing the interior.
The venue is especially renowned for its multi-level layout, offering several rooms that each have their own unique ambiance and sound, catering to a diverse array of musical genres and events—from electronic dance music and hip-hop nights to rock concerts and experimental performances. Webster Hall's influence on the city’s music scene is profound, having played a crucial role in introducing countless artists to New York audiences and helping shape the careers of both local and international musicians. Its blend of historic charm and cutting-edge performance space continues to attract a devoted clientele of music lovers, artists, and partygoers, solidifying its reputation as a cultural landmark that bridges generations and genres.
Notable artists who have performed at Webster Hall include Madonna, Prince, Green Day, Lady Gaga, LCD Soundsystem, Mick Jagger, The Ramones, Guns N’ Roses, Eric Clapton, Nine Inch Nails, Katy Perry, The Hives, Mumford & Sons, Skrillex, Tiësto, Justice, Radiohead (as Atoms for Peace), Sonic Youth, and local New York legends like Run-D.M.C. and The Strokes.
The capacity of Webster Hall is 1500.
