Info

Vogelball is not a traditional nightclub, but rather a renowned annual festival with a distinct clubbing atmosphere that takes place in Hamburg, Germany. Since its inception in 2011, Vogelball has established itself as a cornerstone event for the city’s queer community and electronic music scene. Originally conceived as a masked costume ball (“Vogel” means “bird” in German), the event mixes avant-garde, drag, and club culture with a celebration of diversity and individuality.

Vogelball was first held at the idyllic Wilhelmsburg Island Park, located in Hamburg’s southern district. Over the years, the festival has made use of different venues and open-air spaces within Wilhelmsburg, creatively transforming industrial sites and grassy meadows into colorful, immersive club environments. This fluid approach to location has enhanced Vogelball’s reputation for spontaneity and inclusiveness, attracting a diverse crowd who are encouraged to express themselves through extravagant costumes, particularly feathered masks and bird-inspired outfits.

The festival has grown in reputation far beyond Hamburg, both for its open-minded, welcoming spirit and its carefully curated lineups that blend electronic music with performance art, live acts, and installations. Vogelball has gained cultural significance as a symbol of acceptance and hedonistic freedom, playing a vital role in strengthening the visibility and vibrancy of queer subcultures in Germany. Its distinctive fusion of music, performance, and activism draws comparisons to Berlin's Christopher Street Day and other European queer events, but retains an intimate, playful atmosphere unique to Hamburg.

Notable artists and performers at Vogelball have included international acts like Peaches, Miss Kittin, and Honey Dijon, as well as acclaimed local talents such as DJ sets from Helena Hauff, Falletin, Gudrun Gut, and Fjaak. The festival’s stages have also featured dynamic performances by drag collectives like House of Brownies, and genre-defying acts such as Bonaparte, Planningtorock, and Aérea Negrot, marking Vogelball as an ever-evolving showcase for both established names and cutting-edge emerging talent.
