Trans-Pecos, located at 9-15 Wyckoff Avenue in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens, New York, has become one of the city’s most vital hubs for experimental music and avant-garde culture since its founding in 2013. Housed in a modest, two-story building near the border of Brooklyn and Queens, the venue was established by venue runner Todd P, well known for organizing Bushwick DIY shows, and Ricardo Arias, with the intention of providing a legal and sustainably operated space for the underground community. The history of the building itself stretches back decades, originally serving as a social hall for the German-American Turnverein society in the early 20th century before later functioning as the Silent Barn, another iconic DIY space, until a fire in 2011 forced relocation and reinvention.
After its transformation into Trans-Pecos, the spot quickly attracted a devoted following for its eclectic programming and welcoming ethos, offering everything from boundary-pushing electronic sets to jazz, noise, and global folk music performances, alongside community workshops, visual art installations, and activist meetings. Despite periodic pressure from city authorities during the city's wider clampdown on DIY spaces, and pandemic-era shutdowns that threatened its future, Trans-Pecos has endured, in part due to its focus on inclusivity and collaboration. The venue’s open floor plan and minimalist décor put the focus on the music and foster an intimate environment, drawing diverse crowds from across the city.
A vital stage for up-and-coming local artists as well as touring international acts, Trans-Pecos has played a key role in cementing Ridgewood’s reputation as a creative hotbed while embodying the resilient spirit of New York’s underground scene. The venue continues to evolve, periodically updating its systems, improving acoustics, and seeking new ways to support marginalized voices and community causes, marking it as both a mainstay and innovator in the city’s cultural landscape. Notable artists who have performed at Trans-Pecos include Eartheater, Yves Tumor, Lee Ranaldo (of Sonic Youth), Moor Mother, Show Me the Body, Mitski, Pharmakon, DJ Paypal, Deerhoof, Mykki Blanco, Lightning Bolt, Laurel Halo, Moor Jewelry, Downtown Boys, Liturgy, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Palberta, and a host of local collectives such as the booking crew AdHoc, underground hip-hop artists like MIKE, and the international collective NON Worldwide.
