Originally functioning as part of the larger Tivoli Theatre complex, the Backstage began attracting clubgoers and music enthusiasts in the late 20th century and quickly built a reputation for its electric atmosphere, cutting-edge events, and commitment to hosting both emerging and established talent. The venue was notable for providing a platform for a diverse range of music—from indie and rock to house, techno, and hip-hop—which made it a gathering point for eclectic crowds and contributed to its status as a breeding ground for creative talent in the city.
