Established in 2019 by former Premier League referee Jon Moss and his partner Nicole Sharp, The Vinyl Whistle started as a record shop and café in the Headingley area but soon expanded its purpose to become an intimate club and social hub for music enthusiasts. The venue quickly developed a reputation for its inviting atmosphere, eclectic selection of records, and commitment to supporting both local talent and touring DJs.

While it is primarily known for its daytime operations as a vinyl retailer and community café, in recent years The Vinyl Whistle has grown in cultural significance, regularly hosting club nights, DJ sets, talk events, and album launches that have made it a beloved fixture in Leeds' independent music scene. Despite challenges faced by small venues across the UK, The Vinyl Whistle has adapted by embracing live streaming during the COVID-19 pandemic and by diversifying its offerings to become more than just a record store, morphing into a focal point for the city’s music lovers. The core structure of the venue has remained consistent since its opening, maintaining its compact, welcoming space lined with records, although there have been internal modifications to better accommodate DJ equipment and live events.

No location changes have been reported; the venue remains in its original Headingley site. Notable artists who have performed or DJed at The Vinyl Whistle include international names like DJ Format and Mr. Thing alongside a strong roster of local talent such as Lubi Jovanovic, Reeshy, and Leeds’ own Lucy DK.

The venue has also featured special appearances from DJ collective House of Ruby, producers such as Zepherin Saint, and has hosted album launch events by up-and-coming UK indie bands and electronic artists, cementing its status as a crucible for both established and emerging acts.
