INFO

The Stud is a historic LGBTQ+ nightclub originally established in 1966 in San Francisco, California, and widely regarded as one of the longest-running queer bars in the United States. Known for its eclectic, welcoming atmosphere and boundary-pushing, inclusive spirit, The Stud quickly became a sanctuary for artists, performers, and members of the LGBTQ+ community during a crucial era for queer rights and visibility. The venue first opened its doors at 1535 Folsom Street in the city's South of Market (SoMa) district, an area which would soon become famous for its vibrant nightlife and central role in queer culture.
Over the decades, The Stud developed a reputation as a hub for drag shows, alternative performance art, live music, and late-night dance parties, providing a safe space for self-expression at a time when such places were rare. Following the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s, The Stud remained steadfast, supporting fundraisers and activism while also adapting to shifts in San Francisco’s social and economic landscape. Notably, in 2016, when the club faced closure amid rising rents, a collective of artists, DJs, and community members banded together to purchase the business and operate it cooperatively—a rare model in the bar and nightclub industry—demonstrating its enduring importance to local queer life.
In 2020, due to financial strain brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Stud was forced to vacate its Folsom Street location; however, the collective pledged to reopen in a new physical space, keeping its legacy and community spirit alive and continuing to host virtual events during the interim. The Stud's influence has extended beyond San Francisco, regarded as a blueprint for community-driven nightlife and queer cultural preservation. Notable artists who have performed or appeared at The Stud include international drag superstar RuPaul (who appeared early in their career), club and punk legend Jayne County, local drag icons such as Heklina and Peaches Christ, electronic music pioneers like The Creatrix, underground DJs including Honey Soundsystem and The Synthetigers, and celebrated performers and activists like Juanita MORE! and VivvyAnne ForeverMORE!.
The venue has also spotlighted up-and-coming queens, burlesque dancers, and performance artists from the Bay Area and beyond, cementing its place as an incubator for queer talent and avant-garde nightlife.
