The Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall, located in Los Angeles, California, stands as one of the city's most iconic nightlife and entertainment venues. Established in 1926, the historic auditorium was designed by architect John C. Austin in the Moorish Revival style.
Originally built as the headquarters for the Al Malaikah Shriners, the structure quickly transformed into a significant cultural landmark, renowned for its immense seating capacity of approximately 6,300 and its vast stage, which was among the largest in North America at the time. Over the years, the Shrine has developed a reputation for hosting an incredibly diverse array of events, from prestigious awards shows such as the Academy Awards (hosted there from the late 1940s through the 1990s) to major concerts, live performances, and massive nightclub events. Its adjacent Expo Hall, added in 1974, provides a flexible space for conventions, trade shows, and large-scale dance music gatherings, making the Shrine a central hub in the Los Angeles nightlife and entertainment scene.
The venue’s architectural grandeur—with its sweeping arches, ornate detailing, and dramatic auditorium—has contributed to its status as a beloved historical monument. While the site has undergone periodic renovations to improve acoustics, seating, and safety while maintaining its original character, the physical location has remained unchanged, anchoring the Figueroa Corridor just south of downtown Los Angeles for nearly a century. Throughout its history, the Shrine has not only presented local performing arts and community events but has also been at the forefront of the city’s emergence as a global hotspot for live music, club nights, and popular culture.
Notable artists who have performed at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall include Beyoncé, Prince, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Nine Inch Nails, Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar, Tool, Radiohead, Janelle Monáe, Arcade Fire, Janet Jackson, Childish Gambino, Depeche Mode, Billie Eilish, Frank Ocean, The xx, Anderson .Paak, The Black Keys, Florence + the Machine, Tyler, The Creator, LCD Soundsystem, Lana Del Rey, and many more, including celebrated local acts and emerging talents.
The capacity of Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall is 5000.
