Public Records is a critically acclaimed nightclub and multi-use event space located in Brooklyn, New York, renowned for its high-fidelity sound system, commitment to progressive programming, and focus on sustainability. Opened in March 2019 in the historic former ASPCA headquarters at 233 Butler Street in the Gowanus neighborhood, Public Records was co-founded by Francis Harris, Shane Davis, and Eric Tukel. The venue was designed with both audiophiles and community in mind, with meticulous attention to acoustic detail and sustainable materials, creating an immersive sound experience that stands out even among New York City's revered nightlife destinations.
Public Records quickly established itself as an influential hub for not only electronic music but also a broad spectrum of genres, welcoming a diverse crowd of music lovers drawn to its inclusive ethos and no-photo policy that encourages true presence and connection on the dance floor. The venue includes several distinct spaces: a main sound room with a custom-built sound system, a café, and an ambient listening bar. Since opening, Public Records has gained a reputation for its thoughtful curatorial vision and for promoting both internationally celebrated artists and local talent.
It has been praised in international press for pushing the boundaries of nightlife culture, championing inclusivity, and hosting thoughtful panel discussions, art installations, and record releases in addition to late-night dance parties. Structurally, the venue retains much of its original industrial character, with adaptive reuse upgrades and periodic expansions, such as the addition of the upstairs performance space known as "Upstairs" and frequent improvements to its sound and lighting systems. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Public Records has demonstrated resilience, adapting its programming and outdoor spaces in response to changing health guidelines, and continuing to serve as a vital force in New York's cultural scene.
Public Records has featured a wide array of notable artists, both international and local, including Ben UFO, Floating Points, Honey Dijon, Yaeji, DJ Stingray 313, Aurora Halal, Eris Drew, Octo Octa, DJ Minx, Peach, Tim Sweeney, Move D, Carista, Jayda G, Avalon Emerson, Yu Su, Julia Govor, Jlin, Sassy J, and numerous others, along with regular appearances by local Brooklyn collectives and emerging artists who contribute to the venue's vibrant, ever-evolving programming.
The capacity of public records is 300.
