MoMA PS1, located in Long Island City, Queens, New York, is one of the oldest and most influential nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the United States. It was founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss as the Institute for Art and Urban Resources with the mission to transform abandoned spaces in New York City into studios and exhibition venues for artists. In 1976, the organization established its permanent home in a former public school building (Public School 1), which is where the name PS1 originates.
Over the decades, MoMA PS1 has built a reputation as an avant-garde and experimental venue that focuses on presenting the most cutting-edge developments in contemporary art, architecture, and performance. The institution is particularly known for its bold programming and innovative use of space, including outdoor installations, immersive audio-visual experiences, and notably, its acclaimed summer Warm Up music series that has drawn revelers and music lovers from around the world. In 2000, PS1 formally affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), resulting in increased resources, visibility, and collaborative opportunities, while retaining its distinct identity within the cultural landscape of New York.
Despite remaining in its original location, the venue has undergone several renovations and expansions to better accommodate large-scale installations and diverse programming. MoMA PS1’s regular transformation into a nightclub atmosphere during the Warm Up series has cemented its role not only as an arts institution but also as a pioneering force in music, nightlife, and youth culture. The Warm Up series, in particular, is recognized for featuring dynamic performances that blur the boundaries between a live music concert, DJ event, and art happening, consistently placing MoMA PS1 at the forefront of the global music and club scene.
Notable artists who have performed at MoMA PS1 include international sensations such as Arca, SOPHIE, Nina Kraviz, Jamie xx, Floating Points, Four Tet, and Kaytranada, alongside iconic local DJs and producers like The Martinez Brothers, Venus X, Discwoman collective, MikeQ, Jubilee, and Indoor Boys. The venue has also hosted influential performances from the likes of Yves Tumor, Laurel Halo, Honey Dijon, Jlin, Evian Christ, and Oneohtrix Point Never, further underscoring its reputation as a crucial platform for both emerging and established artists in electronic, hip-hop, experimental, and dance music.
The capacity of MoMA PS1 is 3000.
