Opening its doors in 1984 at 25 East 1st Street, Mars Bar quickly became infamous for its unpretentious atmosphere, graffiti-covered walls, and a clientele that skewed toward artists, punks, musicians, and neighborhood eccentrics. The bar was never a high-end establishment, but that rawness contributed deeply to its appeal, attracting those who sought an authentic, no-frills nightlife experience far from the glitz and glamour of mainstream Manhattan clubs.

Over the years, Mars Bar came to symbolize the spirit of old New York—a final stronghold for bohemian and countercultural expression in a city rapidly gentrifying. Sadly, in July 2011, Mars Bar closed its doors following the expiration of its lease and the beginning of new construction meant to replace it with luxury apartments. The original structure was subsequently demolished, and no new location was ever established, cementing Mars Bar as a bygone icon of pre-gentrified New York nightlife.

Local performers such as Jesse Malin, Richard Hell, and members of the punk group L.E.S. Stitches also graced its cramped stage over the years, alongside poets and visual artists like Anthony Haden-Guest and graffiti legends such as Neck Face and REVS, further solidifying Mars Bar's status as a crucible for NYC's underground creative culture.
