KOKO is a renowned nightclub and live music venue located in the Camden area of
London, United Kingdom. The venue originally opened in 1900 as the Camden Theatre, designed by the architect W.G.
R. Sprague, and has undergone several transformations throughout its history. During the early 20th century, it was converted into a cinema and later became a BBC theatre, known as the Camden Hippodrome, hosting radio broadcasts and variety shows.
In the 1970s, the site was reinvented as The Music Machine, a prominent punk and new wave venue, before becoming Camden Palace in 1982, which played a pivotal role in the burgeoning club and dance music scene of the era. In 2004, after extensive refurbishment, the venue reopened as KOKO, with a focus on both live music and club nights, blending its historic Victorian architecture with modern audio-visual technology. KOKO’s reputation has made it a cultural cornerstone of
London’s nightlife, known for its distinctive red interior, plush balconies, and opulent theatre setting, offering a unique concert experience.
The venue has maintained its original location at 1A Camden High Street, though it has periodically closed for restorations, most notably undergoing a major multi-million-pound refurbishment before its grand reopening in 2022 following significant fire damage in 2020. Throughout its existence, KOKO has played host to a slew of legendary performances and has provided a vital platform for emerging talent, securing its status as a key fixture in both the UK and global music scenes.
Notable artists who have graced the stage at KOKO include Prince, Kanye West, Madonna, Amy Winehouse, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers,
Florence + The Machine, Lady Gaga, Paul Weller, Arctic Monkeys, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, The Libertines, Bloc Party, and international acts such as Alicia Keys, N.
E.R.D, and Bruno Mars.
The venue has also been a launchpad for local and up-and-coming artists, cementing its reputation as one of
London’s most beloved and influential live music destinations.
