Holzmarkt 25 is a unique, culturally significant nightclub and creative space located in
Berlin, Germany, along the banks of the Spree River in the Friedrichshain district. Its origins can be traced to the legendary Bar25, which was established in 2004 and became famous for its hedonistic, marathon parties and bohemian spirit. After Bar25 was forced to close in 2010 due to urban development pressures, a collective of its founders and creative minds initiated a new project—Holzmarkt 25—in 2012.
Designed to be much more than just a club, Holzmarkt 25 is an urban village that includes studios, restaurants, small shops, arts spaces, and the well-known outdoor nightclub Kater Blau. The area is recognized for its alternative ethos, an open-minded and inclusive atmosphere that draws artists, musicians, and free spirits from around the world. Over the years, Holzmarkt 25 has fortified its reputation as a symbol of
Berlin's resistance to gentrification and its commitment to fostering independent cultural experimentation.
The venue works as a cooperative, with an enduring mission to create a sustainable, multifaceted urban community rather than a purely commercial nightlife spot. Structurally, the site has evolved from makeshift, recycled constructions reminiscent of the original Bar25, into a more permanent and elaborately designed riverside village, replete with art installations, creative studios, and its signature quirky wooden buildings. Despite changing city policies and the constant pressure of urban development, Holzmarkt 25 has managed to thrive and is now viewed as a rare survivor amid many shuttered
Berlin clubs.
