Friends & Lovers is a well-known nightclub and music venue located in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Established in 2013, Friends & Lovers has become a staple of the city’s nightlife scene, beloved for its commitment to diversity, community, and artistic expression. The space was co-founded by
Diana McClure and Eamon
Harkin, both of whom sought to create an inclusive environment where patrons could experience emerging music talent from a variety of genres, especially those grounded in the traditions of hip-hop, R&B, soul, house, and electronic music.
Over the years, the club has built a reputation for hosting both up-and-coming artists and established acts, and it is widely recognized as one of the venues instrumental in revitalizing Brooklyn's nightlife in the 2010s. Friends & Lovers is also celebrated for its role in supporting LGBTQIA+ events, socially conscious programming, and fostering inclusivity on and off the dance floor. The physical layout of the venue is typical for neighborhood clubs: an inviting, intimate bar area complemented by a dance space and stage, balancing cozy community vibes with the excitement of live performance energy.
While Friends & Lovers has generally remained at its original Franklin Avenue location, it has periodically updated its interior to accommodate larger audiences, improved acoustic experiences, and create a safer, more inviting space, particularly after the reopening post-pandemic. Its impact stretches beyond music, contributing to Brooklyn’s cultural landscape as a gathering point for creative communities, grassroots initiatives, and nightlife enthusiasts. Notable artists who have performed at Friends & Lovers over the years include local favorites like
Tygapaw, Quiana Parks, and DJ Akalepse, as well as international acts such as
TOKiMONSTA,
Gilles Peterson, and
Romare.
The venue has also hosted DJ sets by Just Blaze,
Jubilee, and
Natasha Diggs, and has featured live showcases from bands and performers including Gabriel Garzón-Montano and Nick Hakim, further cementing its status as a crucial hub in the Brooklyn music ecosystem.
