FOLD is a renowned nightclub and creative space located in the industrial heart of Canning Town, East London, United Kingdom. Opened in August 2018 by a collective of music lovers and promoters including the group Shapes, FOLD quickly distinguished itself with its commitment to underground dance music, top-quality sound, and a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere. Built inside a repurposed warehouse, the club originally offered a unique, raw aesthetic that harked back to the city’s illegal rave heritage while embracing the diversity of London’s electronic scene.
FOLD garnered critical acclaim for its non-stop, multi-hour events—often running for up to 24 hours—fostering a vibrant environment for experimentation and discovery, free from commercial pressures and mainstream trends. The venue became particularly significant as one of London’s few fully licensed, legal afterhours clubs, providing safe haven to ravers and LGBTQ+ communities amid growing concerns over nightlife restrictions and gentrification across the city. Over time, FOLD has expanded its programming, hosting art exhibitions, workshops, and activism, which cemented its reputation as more than a nightclub, but rather a cultural hub for forward-thinking music and creativity.
The physical structure itself, with its custom-built high-fidelity sound system and minimalistic industrial design, has seen incremental improvements but remains true to its original warehouse character. Through its resilience, especially during COVID-19 challenges, FOLD has continued to champion artistic integrity, inclusivity, and accessibility, contributing to London’s international standing as a center for electronic music innovation.
