Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, often called the "Elphi," is not a nightclub but rather one of the most iconic and celebrated concert halls in Germany, located in the HafenCity district of Hamburg. The venue sits atop the historic Kaispeicher A, a former warehouse built between 1963 and 1966, blending striking modern architecture with the city's maritime heritage. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, its glass structure, resembling a hoisted sail or a wave, was completed in 2016 after nearly a decade of construction and several delays.
Officially opening its doors in January 2017, the Elbphilharmonie quickly earned a reputation as a premier destination for classical music, jazz, and a wide range of contemporary performances, attracting visitors from around the world. While not traditionally a nightclub, the Elbphilharmonie’s versatile spaces, including its Grand Hall, Recital Hall, and smaller Studio, have hosted an impressive variety of events, from orchestral concerts to electronic music nights, positioning it as a cultural magnet at the intersection of high art and cutting-edge performance. The venue’s design innovation includes state-of-the-art acoustics, developed in collaboration with renowned acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, making it a sought-after stage for both established and emerging artists.
No major relocation or structural change has occurred since its opening, though it continues to evolve in the scope of its programming and community engagement. Sitting at the heart of Hamburg’s vibrant port, the Elbphilharmonie has become a symbol of the city’s commitment to cultural excellence, architectural ambition, and creative diversity. Notable artists and ensembles who have performed at the Elbphilharmonie include the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, pianist Lang Lang, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, jazz legends such as Brad Mehldau and Chick Corea, as well as international icons like Patti Smith, and local German talents including Nils Frahm, Ensemble Resonanz, and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.
The capacity of Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is 2100.
