Info

El Cid is a historic nightclub and live entertainment venue located in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, United States. Established in 1963, El Cid originally operated as a supper club and flamenco dinner theater, building upon the bohemian spirit that defined the area. The venue was carved out of a Spanish-style building originally constructed in 1900 as the Jail Café, a themed restaurant, before being reimagined as El Cid by flamenco dancer Margarita Cordova and guitarist Clark Allen.

Over time, El Cid developed a reputation as a cultural hub for flamenco and Spanish music in Los Angeles, serving as one of the few venues dedicated to this art form in the city. Its intimate setting, characterized by a charming outdoor patio, artful tilework, and a distinctive red-hued ambiance, helped preserve the venue's old-world character while welcoming a diverse clientele. Throughout its history, El Cid remained committed to live performance, expanding beyond flamenco to include genres such as indie rock, jazz, stand-up comedy, burlesque, and themed dance parties.

The venue’s unique combination of history, architecture, and eclectic programming made it a cultural landmark in the city, attracting both local patrons and international visitors. While El Cid has maintained its original location at 4212 Sunset Boulevard, its offerings have continuously evolved, blending traditional Spanish performances with modern entertainment trends as the nightlife and arts scene in Silver Lake transformed over the decades. This adaptability, combined with its strong cultural heritage, cements El Cid’s place as a significant venue in Los Angeles' nightlife and music history.

Notable artists and groups who have performed at El Cid include international flamenco stars such as Carmen Amaya and Antonio Triana, as well as prominent local acts like Cold War Kids, Silversun Pickups, The Airborne Toxic Event, Warpaint, Best Coast, and emerging singer-songwriters such as Phoebe Bridgers and Moses Sumney. Comedians like Natasha Leggero and Hannibal Buress have appeared on its stage, and the venue has hosted unique events with performers across disciplines, further highlighting its diverse contribution to the city’s cultural landscape.
