DNA Lounge is an iconic nightclub and live music venue located in San Francisco, California, United States. Established in 1985, DNA Lounge quickly became a fixture in the city's vibrant nightlife and underground music scenes. The club has long been celebrated for its eclectic programming, inclusive atmosphere, and for fostering local artists and subcultures.
Originally founded at its current 375 Eleventh Street location, DNA Lounge began as a smaller club, but underwent significant expansions and renovations, particularly after 2001 when the venue was purchased by Internet entrepreneur Jamie Zawinski. Zawinski's ambitious overhaul included state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, a second stage known as the "Dazzle Room," and the addition of a full-service pizzeria, DNA Pizza, enhancing the venue's appeal and versatility. Over the decades, DNA Lounge has built a reputation as a welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community, showcasing a diverse array of musical genres such as electronic, goth, industrial, hip-hop, punk, and alternative rock, as well as hosting burlesque, live theater, and drag shows.
A key cultural touchstone, it is best known for long-running events like the monthly "Bootie" mashup dance party and recurring club nights that celebrate alternative and electronic music. Its resilience in the face of San Francisco's challenging nightlife economics and waves of gentrification, along with its fiercely independent ownership, have cemented its place as a mainstay of Bay Area nightlife, representing an enduring hub for creativity, inclusivity, and underground culture. Notable artists and DJs who have performed at DNA Lounge include internationally renowned acts such as Ladytron, Moby, Deadmau5, The Crystal Method, Dieselboy, and Peaches.
The venue has also served as a launchpad for prominent local talent and DJs, including members of the Bootie mashup crew like Adrian & the Mysterious D, Vau de Vire Society, Kid Beyond, and local electronic and hip-hop collectives. DNA Lounge continues to attract an eclectic mix of performers, maintaining its status as a vital platform for emerging and established acts alike.
