BELOW GRŪND is a highly regarded nightclub in the United States known for its dedication to underground electronic music and an inclusive, avant-garde atmosphere. It first opened its doors in 2015 in a repurposed industrial basement space in Detroit, Michigan, tapping into the city’s deep roots in techno and house music. The founders, a collective of local DJs and artists, envisioned BELOW GRŪND as a sanctuary for progressive club culture, free from commercial constraints and celebrity hype.
From its inception, the venue became a locus for self-expression, creativity, and experimentation, drawing both local party-goers and international visitors. Over the years, BELOW GRŪND developed a reputation for its immersive lighting installations, custom sound system, and strict no-photos policy, helping attendees lose themselves in the experience and music. In 2019, the venue faced closure due to rezoning and development pressures in its original location, but it quickly found a new home in a converted warehouse on the outskirts of the city.
The new space retained the essence of the original, with underground aesthetics and an unwavering commitment to quality music curation. BELOW GRŪND’s cultural significance lies in its championing of queer and marginalized communities within dance music, as well as its support for emerging local talent alongside seasoned legends. The club’s ethos, rooted in inclusivity, artistic freedom, and pure love for electronic music, has made it a cornerstone of the American underground scene, comparable to iconic venues in Berlin and London.
Internationally renowned artists and local rising stars who have graced BELOW GRŪND’s decks include Ben Klock, Honey Dijon, Eris Drew, The Blessed Madonna, DJ Stingray 313, Helena Hauff, Detroit’s own Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, Kyle Hall, Shigeto, DJ Holographic, Ash Lauryn, and countless others who continue to shape the venue’s legacy as a premier destination for authentic, cutting-edge club culture.
The capacity of BELOW GRŪND is 150.
