INFO

Band on the Wall, located at 27 Swan St, Manchester M4 5JZ, is one of Manchester's most storied and cherished music venues, celebrated for its rich history, cultural diversity, and enduring commitment to live music. The venue traces its origins back to the 19th century, when it was known as The George and Dragon public house. In the 1930s, with the rise of jazz and swing music, the pub began hosting live performances, earning its unique name from a small stage literally mounted on the wall where musicians would perform to maximize space.
Over the decades, Band on the Wall became synonymous with Manchester’s vibrant music scene, especially as a key venue for jazz, blues, folk, reggae, and later, world music and emerging genres. Managed by the charity Inner City Music since 1984, it has sustained itself as a cultural hub, providing a platform for both established and emerging artists while fostering community engagement through educational programs and outreach. The venue has undergone significant structural and operational transformations to adapt to changing times and audience needs.
Perhaps the most notable change was a multimillion-pound renovation completed in 2009, which expanded the performance space, improved accessibility, and updated facilities, while carefully preserving the historical character of the building. This modern upgrade revitalized Band on the Wall, reinforcing its reputation not only as a premier live music venue but also as an essential fixture in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Despite rumors and periods of uncertainty about its future, including financial pressures, the venue has remained at its original location on Swan Street, serving as a testament to the resilience and dynamism of Manchester’s nightlife and music culture.
Internationally and locally acclaimed artists who have graced the Band on the Wall stage include Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Elbow, Björk, The Fall, Mick Hucknall’s bands before Simply Red, Courtney Pine, Finley Quaye, Gregory Porter, The Cinematic Orchestra, GoGo Penguin, Nubya Garcia, Snarky Puppy, Youssou N'Dour, Eddie Reader, and John Cooper Clarke. The venue has also been instrumental in promoting up-and-coming talent and supporting a broad spectrum of music from global traditions, cementing its legacy as a vital incubator and showcase for the world’s music in the heart of Manchester.
