Info

Akbar is a well-known nightclub and bar situated in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1996 by business partners Scott Craig and Peter Alexander, Akbar quickly became an essential fixture in LA’s LGBTQ+ nightlife scene. Unlike the glitzier nightclubs of West Hollywood, Akbar developed a reputation for being both unpretentious and inclusive, attracting a diverse and creative crowd while offering a safe space for all identities.

The venue was originally conceptualized as a modern “bohemian” bar, reflecting the artistic and alternative spirit of Silver Lake, and has maintained its original location at 4356 Sunset Boulevard since opening. Over the years, Akbar has expanded its physical space to include a backroom dance floor and performance area, allowing it to host a wide range of events, from DJ dance nights and live music to comedy shows and drag performances. The décor—with its disco balls and vintage lamps—adds to the quirky, eclectic charm for which Akbar is known.

Culturally, Akbar has been praised for fostering an atmosphere of community, especially during pivotal moments for LGBTQ rights and culture in Los Angeles. Many credit the club with helping to anchor the eastside queer scene and providing an alternative to mainstream gay nightlife. Its consistently progressive music programming and support of local artists, activists, and nonprofit causes have cemented Akbar’s status as more than just a nightclub, but a cultural institution within LA.

Notable artists who have performed at Akbar over the years include local luminaries like DJ Dirty Dave, DJ Victor Rodriguez, and DJ Chris Bowen, as well as celebrated nightlife personalities such as Princess Superstar and Justin Vivian Bond. International performers and acts including Larry Tee and JD Samson (of Le Tigre fame) have also graced the club’s stage, bringing their eclectic sounds and broadening Akbar's reputation for cutting-edge music. The venue has served as a launchpad for rising LA drag performers like Jackie Beat and Meatball, and frequently features sets by beloved collectives such as Bears in Space and Mustache Mondays, further staking its claim as a hub of creativity and inclusivity in Los Angeles nightlife.
