2220 Arts + Archives is a renowned multidisciplinary arts space and nightclub located in the historic Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Founded on the foundations of what was previously known as the Bootleg Theater, the venue underwent a transformation and reopening in 2021 under its new moniker, emerging as a dynamic hub for contemporary and experimental music, film, spoken word, art exhibitions, and community programming. The building itself, an early 20th-century structure, has retained much of its original character, offering a uniquely intimate and welcoming environment for both artists and audiences.
Over the years, 2220 Arts + Archives has cultivated a reputation for championing adventurous, boundary-pushing creativity and fostering a sense of community among diverse cultural scenes within Los Angeles. It is known for its commitment to independent and underground art forms, regularly hosting film screenings, panel discussions, performances, and DJ nights that highlight voices from across the creative spectrum. The venue’s impact extends beyond traditional nightlife, functioning as a vital archive and incubator for Los Angeles' vast and innovative artistic tapestry.
Originally established as the Bootleg Theater in the early 2000s, the space was a staple for live music and performance arts in LA, before closing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reborn as 2220 Arts + Archives through a collective effort by local artists, curators, and cultural organizers, it maintained the spirit of its predecessor while expanding its programming to include archival and educational initiatives. While its physical location at 2220 Beverly Boulevard has remained unchanged since its reopening, the internal infrastructure has been updated to better support multimedia presentations and live performances, reinforcing its status as a contemporary art landmark.
Notable artists who have performed or presented work at 2220 Arts + Archives include international figures such as Sun Ra Arkestra, William Basinski, Thurston Moore, and Grouper, alongside celebrated local and national acts like Julia Holter, Devendra Banhart, Nite Jewel, Charles Mingus Dynasty, and DJ sets from Flying Lotus. The venue has also hosted special events and collaborations featuring experimental filmmakers like Kenneth Anger and live appearances by emerging Los Angeles-based collectives, ensuring a continually evolving and influential presence in the city’s creative ecosystem.
