ISIS is an influential American post-metal band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1997. Renowned for fusing elements of heavy metal, ambient, and experimental rock, the group became a defining force in the genre commonly referred to as "post-metal" or "atmospheric sludge metal." The original lineup featured Aaron Turner on vocals and guitar, with Jeff Caxide on bass, Michael Gallagher on guitar, Aaron Harris on drums, and Bryant Clifford Meyer joining later on keyboards and guitar.
With their debut EPs and groundbreaking albums like "Oceanic" (2002) and "Panopticon" (2004), ISIS carved a distinct musical identity focused on expansive soundscapes, intricate rhythms, and lyrical themes exploring isolation, nature, and transformation. Their live performances were known for their intensity and immersive atmosphere, often accompanied by striking visual projections. After a series of celebrated releases, ISIS disbanded in 2010, citing a desire to end on a high note and pursue new creative paths.
Despite their dissolution, their music continues to inspire fans and musicians across the heavy and experimental music scenes, cementing ISIS as pioneers whose legacy echoes well beyond their years of active collaboration.
