Cafe Del Mar is an iconic nightclub and bar located in Sant Antoni de Portmany on the Spanish island of
Ibiza. Established in 1980 by Ramó
n Guiral, Carlos
Andrea, and
José Les, the venue quickly became famous for its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean sunset, which guests regularly admire while enjoying chilled-out music and drinks on the shoreline. Initially envisioned as a laid-back spot where people could unwind and watch the sky fade into night, Cafe Del Mar helped popularize the genre of "chill-out" and "Balearic beat" music, becoming almost synonymous with the distinctive sounds and atmosphere of
Ibiza's nightlife.
Over the years, the venue's reputation grew internationally, in large part due to the release of the "Cafe Del Mar" compilation albums, starting in 1994, which featured tracks from top ambient and electronic musicians and solidified its standing as a beacon of
Ibiza's unique party culture.
Despite the evolution of
Ibiza's nightlife with the rise and fall of superclubs, Cafe Del Mar has remained relatively faithful to its roots, with only minor renovations and expansions to accommodate the millions of visitors it has attracted over decades. The structure
still boasts its original minimalist, Mediterranean-inspired design, complete with whitewashed walls and terraced outdoor seating.
In addition to serving as a beloved sundown bar, Cafe Del Mar has at times collaborated with a neighboring club known as Cafe Mambo and spawned several international franchises, including offshoots in Thailand and Malta, further extending its brand and concept worldwide.
Still, the original location on
Ibiza remains the epicenter of its identity, earning fame as a cultural touchstone for clubbers and music lovers, as well as a symbol of the island's relaxed yet sophisticated party spirit.
Over the years, Cafe Del Mar has hosted performances and DJ sets from a wide range of notable artists, both local and global, who have contributed to its legendary status.
