Mother Earth is a British acid jazz band formed in London in 1991, notable for their distinctive blend of jazz-funk, soul, and psychedelic rock influences. Emerging from the vibrant UK acid jazz scene of the early 1990s, Mother Earth was founded by keyboardist and composer Brendan Beal alongside vocalist Matt Deighton, who later pursued a successful solo career and joined legendary acts such as Paul Weller’s band and briefly Oasis. The original lineup also included talented musicians such as drummer Chris White, bassist Neil Corcoran, and percussionist Shauna Greene.
Over the course of their career, the band released critically acclaimed albums like “Stoned Woman” (1993), “The People Tree” (1994), and “You Have Been Watching” (1995), gaining recognition for their dynamic live performances and authentic throwback sound. Their music features a rich tapestry of Hammond organ grooves, soulful vocals, and tight rhythm sections, drawing from classic 1960s and 1970s sounds while adding a modern, eclectic twist. Revered for their musicianship and songwriting, Mother Earth became cult favorites within the UK and Europe, and their tracks continue to be championed by acid jazz aficionados and record collectors worldwide.
Although the band’s activity waned after the mid-90s, their influence on the acid jazz genre remains significant, and their recordings are celebrated for capturing the energy and spirit of a unique era in British music.
