Mat Matthews

Mat Matthews is a contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, and installation, with a particular focus on the interplay between memory, environment, and identity. Raised in the American Midwest, Matthews was influenced by both urban industrial landscapes and the subtleties of rural decay, elements that frequently appear as motifs in his work. He earned his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011 and has since exhibited in numerous solo and group shows across the United States and Europe.

Matthews’s work is characterized by its evocative use of texture and color, often layering found objects, archival photographs, and mixed media to create immersive visual narratives. His recent projects explore the ways in which personal and collective histories intersect, inviting viewers to confront the emotional resonance of place and time. Matthews currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, where he continues to push the boundaries of materiality and form in contemporary art.
