Mali, born Mallory Evans in 1993 in Oakland, California, is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, installation, and performance. Deeply influenced by her upbringing in the Bay Area’s vibrant artistic and activist communities, Mali explores themes of cultural memory, displacement, and identity. After receiving her BFA from the California College of the Arts in 2016, she undertook residencies in Berlin and Dakar, expanding her visual language by integrating Afro-diasporic histories with experimental materials and processes.
Her acclaimed series “Rootwork” has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States and Europe, garnering attention for its evocative blend of organic textures and striking color palettes. Mali’s practice often incorporates found objects and community-sourced elements, emphasizing collaboration and collective healing. Through her art, she seeks to create immersive experiences that invite viewers into dialogues about belonging, resilience, and transformation in contemporary society.
