Juan Atkins

Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1962, Juan Atkins is widely recognized as one of the founding fathers of techno music. As a teenager, he was inspired by the futuristic sounds of Parliament-Funkadelic, Kraftwerk, and the possibilities of electronic instruments. Atkins soon connected with fellow musicians Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, together known as the Belleville Three, who would go on to shape the city’s musical landscape.

In the early 1980s, Atkins formed the electro duo Cybotron with Rick Davis, producing seminal tracks like “Clear” that integrated funk, synthpop, and science fiction themes. After Cybotron, Atkins launched his solo project Model 500, releasing genre-defining classics such as “No UFO’s” and “Night Drive (Thru-Babylon),” and established his own label, Metroplex, in 1985. This independent outlet became instrumental in the evolution and spread of techno, showcasing innovative releases by Atkins and other pioneering artists.

Throughout his career, Atkins has maintained a reputation for pushing the boundaries of electronic music while staying true to its underground roots. His extensive discography includes solo albums, collaborations, and remixes, recognized for their influential sound and futuristic vision. He continues to perform and record internationally, regarded as an essential architect of techno whose legacy remains vital in contemporary dance music.
