James Damian

James Damian is a contemporary visual artist from South Africa whose work explores the intersections of identity, memory, and the urban experience. Born in Cape Town in 1987, Damian grew up at the crossroads of diverse cultural influences, an experience that profoundly shapes his artistic vision. He graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, where he developed a multidisciplinary practice encompassing painting, photography, and mixed media installations.

Damian’s art is characterized by vivid color palettes, layered textures, and the incorporation of found materials, often reflecting the dynamic yet tumultuous spirit of his homeland. Through his evocative compositions, he engages with personal and collective histories, confronting themes of displacement, resilience, and transformation. Damian has exhibited widely across South Africa, earning recognition at venues such as the Zeitz MOCAA and Goodman Gallery, and his works are held in both private and public collections.
