J. Richards is a multidisciplinary artist whose evocative works bridge the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and digital media. Born in 1987 in Detroit, Michigan, Richards developed an early fascination with urban landscapes and the interplay between memory and architecture—a theme that continues to inform much of their work.
After receiving a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009 and an MFA from Yale University in 2014, Richards established a practice grounded in both abstraction and figuration, often incorporating found materials and layered textures to evoke personal and collective histories. Richards’s installations and mixed-media pieces have been exhibited in solo and group shows at prominent galleries across the United States and Europe, earning critical acclaim for their ability to evoke both nostalgia and futuristic possibility. In addition to their studio practice, Richards is an active educator and community organizer, committed to expanding accessibility and fostering dialogue within the contemporary art world.
Their work is held in several public and private collections, and they currently live and work in Brooklyn, New York.
