Carmen Baía

Carmen Baía is a contemporary visual artist whose work blends elements of surrealism, folklore, and urban life, creating vibrant and dreamlike compositions that explore cultural identity and personal memory. Born in 1987 in Recife, Brazil, Baía was immersed in the rich tapestry of Brazilian traditions and stories from an early age, and these influences can be seen in her lush color palettes and whimsical forms. She studied Fine Arts at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, where she deepened her understanding of both classical and modern techniques.

Her paintings, illustrations, and mixed-media installations frequently center on the experiences of women and the nuances of everyday existence, often weaving in motifs from regional mythology and contemporary street culture. Since her first solo exhibition in 2013, Baía’s work has been showcased in galleries across Brazil and internationally, earning her recognition for her distinctive style and poetic visual storytelling. In addition to her studio practice, she actively engages in community arts workshops, championing accessibility to the arts and encouraging creative expression among young people in her hometown.
