Carlos Pérez

Carlos Pérez is a multidisciplinary artist known for his evocative exploration of cultural memory, migration, and identity. Born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1982, Pérez’s early experiences in a vibrant yet tumultuous urban environment laid the foundation for his later work, which often grapples with questions of displacement and belonging. After relocating to New York City in 2005, he earned his BFA from the School of Visual Arts and later completed an MFA at Hunter College.

Pérez’s practice spans painting, installation, video, and sculpture, seamlessly blending traditional techniques with experimental approaches to material and form. His bold color palette and dynamic compositions reflect both personal narratives and broader socio-political histories, drawing on influences from Latin American folklore, street art, and documentary photography. Pérez’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at venues such as the Queens Museum, Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

In addition to his studio practice, he is actively involved in community-based art initiatives, fostering creative dialogue between immigrant communities in the United States and Latin America. Throughout his career, Pérez has received numerous accolades, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant, and he continues to shape contemporary art discourse with his poignant, visually arresting works.
