Cabaret Voltaire

Cabaret Voltaire is an influential electronic and industrial music group formed in Sheffield, England, in 1973 by Richard H. Kirk, Stephen Mallinder, and initially Chris Watson. Pioneers of experimental sound, the band took its name from the Zurich nightclub associated with the early Dada movement, reflecting their avant-garde ethos.

Rooted in post-punk and industrial sensibilities, Cabaret Voltaire developed a distinctive style characterized by tape loops, found sounds, abrasive electronics, and cryptic vocals. Their early work helped lay the groundwork for the industrial and electronic body music scenes, while albums such as "Red Mecca," "The Voice of America," and "Micro-Phonies" showcased their evolution into darker, dance-oriented rhythms that anticipated developments in techno and house. The group’s visual and sonic experimentation, including significant use of video art, underscored their commitment to multimedia innovation.

Through relentless reinvention across a prolific career, Cabaret Voltaire have remained a transformative force on the edges of popular music, influencing countless artists in electronic, dance, and alternative genres.
